The New England Patriots advanced to the AFC Championship game last night after they came back from two 14 point deficits to beat the Baltimore Ravens 35-31 in a sensational Divisonal Round game.
Late in the third quarter, trailing 28-21, QB Tom Brady threw the ball to WR Julian Edelmen who swung a 51 yard pass to fellow WR Danny Amendola to level the game. Edelman used to play QB at Kent State.
That wasn't the only trick the Pats dug out last night. Must to the annoyance of Baltimore Head Coach John Harbaugh, the Patriots lined up with only four offensive lineman and declared Shane Vereen - a running back - ineligible on another play in the third quarter. Baltimore were confused as to who to cover and Tight End Michael Hoomanawanui reeled in a big play.
Harbaugh - who was penalised for stepping onto the field to remonstrate with officials for the play - said after:
We wanted an opportunity to be able to ID who the eligible players were, What [the Patriots] were doing was they announce the ineligible player and then Brady would take them to the line right away and snap the ball before we had a chance to figure out who was lined up where. That was the deception part of it. It was clearly deception.
Tom Brady had little sympathy:
"Maybe those guys gotta study the rulebook and figure it out, We obviously knew what we were doing and we made some pretty important plays. It was a real good weapon for us."
