Channelle McCoy was on Sean O'Rourke on Radio One this morning to discuss the recently announced retirement of her husband, Tony, and gave a fascinating insight into his life including what it takes for him to make-weight.
As well as revealing he's not been able to eat a spud in 15 years (surely a record for an Irishman) and only eats dinner three nights a week, Chanelle revealed just how long he has to spend in a bath to make weight.
He has a hot bath every morning and about six nights a week, so he spends on average two hours a day in the bath and he would lose two-three pounds of fluid so that's difficult mentally and he won't miss that.
She also recounted the now famous taxi journey the couple took on Saturday during which the driver asked had they heard that AP was retiring.
We were driving out of the airport and the taxi guy said 'did you hear AP is retiring' so AP and I were sitting in the back of the car and we looked at each other and we just, we absolutely started roaring laughing, the taxi driving said, 'what are you laughing at?' and I said 'He is McCoy!' and AP was like 'I am AP!'
Spending some 14 hours per week in the bath as well as skipping four meals a week are just two examples of the dedication the champion jockey has shown to his sport, once which will be at a loss upon his retirement.
