Michael Greller first attended the US Masters in 2012. It was a big expense for a Maths (or Math as they say over there) teacher in Washington State but he was golf obsessive, having played at Iowa university.

After moonlighting as a caddy in Florida and then Seattle, he linked up with the 18 year old Spieth for the 2011 US Amateur. Spieth won the tournament and finished as the low amateur at the 2012 US Open.

When Spieth turned pro, Greller decided to take a one year leave of absence from teaching to carry his bag full-time. It was a big risk especially given that he didn't anticipate Spieth turning into a superstar.

I was getting married, had a house. To go chase this kid caddieing was kind of a big risk. And then he went crazy.
