We heard the reports this morning about Spurs fans getting beat up before today's Europa league match against Lazio and we presumed it was the usual thing of inebriated football supporter or two acting up abroad. And then we read PA reporter Paul Hirst's twitter feed today and learned that Spurs fans were apparently 'ambushed' last night - smokebombed out of the Drunken Ship they were drinking in only to flee and arrive
Very, very busy day here in Rome. Spoke to lots of people about the incident at the Drunken Ship, where #Spurs fans were attacked last night

From the interviews I have done it seems a group of abt 20 people wearing helmets stormed the pub at 1am, threw canisters of gas inside...

and then picked up whatever they could find to beat the people inside. There were about 15 Spurs fans inside at the time, plus many tourists

Sounds like some of the attackers also had knuckle dusters. The attackers cornered the people in the pub and beat them with sticks+chair legs

Tables, glasses+chairs were thrown at them. The ordeal lasted about 10 minutes. One fan was stabbed outside, possibly around his thigh area.

One fan, who didn't want to be names, said to me "I feared the worst. It was a pre-planned attack, an ambush...like something u c in a film.

Absolutely no indication that #Spurs fans provoked the incident. No loud singing in the bar. Only one of them was wearing a Tottenham shirt.
