It should not surprise many of you that Roy Keane is not necessarily pleased with the exorbitant amounts of money being spent on transfers recently.
Speaking ahead of Ireland's crucial two qualifiers against Georgia and Serbia, the player who once set the British transfer record with his £3.75 million move to Manchester United had plenty to say on the matter:
It's mind-boggling, the figures that are out there - especially for the average players. If ever there was a time to be a professional player it's now. Average players are going for £35million. My goodness.
Rarely one who is happy to indulge the mere existence of 'average players', Keane nonetheless feels that 'if the clubs are prepared to pay that, then it's not the players' fault.'
Yet, while the notably increase in transfer fees may continue to expand until the speculated burst of this unstable bubble, it's probably as well that Keane is currently working within an international setup at the moment.
Indulging in an atypical line of questioning, Keane speculated upon the modern-day worth of some of his old United teammates:
Ruud [van Nistelrooy] would certainly be worth in the market now probably a billion ... David Beckham? A billion. Ryan Giggs? Two billion.
High praise indeed from Keane.
Humbly enough he hasn't altered his own worth beyond the £3.75 million fee paid for him 24 years ago.
In today's climate however, there's a good chance that some club - probably Burnley - would pay that amount for the 46 year old Keane.
