RTÉ has announced that the new season of popular show Ireland Fittest Family has been postponed after the tragic passing of one of its contestants.

The show's 12th season was due to air from Sunday, October 27th but those plans have been scrapped following the news.

RTÉ released a statement on Tuesday afternoon, extending its 'deepest sympathies' to the family and friends of the contestant who has sadly passed away.

RTÉ and Kite/Animo productions wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and friends at this time.

"Further details regarding the broadcast of the series will be provided in due course."

The show has been a hit for the broadcaster and sees 16 families compete against one another in a serious of rigoruous physical challenges.

The latest season had been filmed at Kilruddery Estate in Wicklow with all of the necessary editing subsequently completed, as per The Sunday World.

A slot to promote the show on The Late Late Show this Friday night has reportedly been cancelled as a result of the tragic loss.
