Those who witnessed Rory McIlroy tearing holes 8 through to 15 to shreds in the 2nd round of the BMW SA Open will wonder how he only ended up scoring 68 this afternoon.
As it is he finds himself three shots behind England's Graeme Storm, who hit a course record 63, untainted by the bogeys and double bogeys which scarred Rory's card.
On the 8th tee, Rory was at +2 for the day and -3 for the championship and a depressing nine shots off the lead.
In an incredible spell, he went -8 for the next eight holes, starting with an eagle at the 8th hole. He then birdied all the way through to 15 save for a par on 11. He didn't miss a single putt in the stretch.
Storm, who believed he had lost his European Tour card following the Portugal Masters, has been granted a lifeline by the withdrawal of Patrick Reed from this event.
Though currently sitting on top of the leaderboard, he modestly tips Rory to win this Sunday. McIlroy has been struggling with back problems and afterwards said he found the early holes tough.
