Robbie Keane was discussing his future with Jim White on Talksport this morning.
Keane is set on continuing but last Friday indicated that he would finish his career in the League of Ireland, a la Damien Duff. While collecting a special merit award at the SWAI ceremony, he said he'd be in Ireland for a fortnight but would shortly be moving on.
Despite this, Shamrock Rovers remain third favourites in the betting at 7/2. The better than even money favourites are Preston, who are in the process of turning themselves in the most Irish club in the English league. He's at 4/5, according to the latest odds.
Second favourites are Brighton at 3/1. A team called 'Any Australian club' are included at 9/1, though Robbie has already said he doesn't want to head to Australia.
On Talksport, he said he's "had to knock back" offers because they were too far away. That's Australia conclusively ruled out so. He also told White that people are constantly asking him about Wolves and Leeds United, two former clubs of his.
Robbie's straightforward response to those queries is that you can't go somewhere where there's been no offer of a job.
Keep this space, the next couple of weeks and we'll see what happens. I've had a couple of offers from England and abroad. I've had to knock back a couple because it was too far away.
I've got a few offers on the table. I have a lot of people asking are you coming back to Leeds, Wolves, etc. But you can't go somewhere where there is not an offer. I definitely haven't heard from Leeds or Wolves. There are a few Championship clubs who I don't want to mention at the moment.
If the bookies have it right and Keane does head for Deepdale, that will increase the number of Irish players in the Preston squad to six. Already, Daryl Horgan, Aiden McGeady, Andy Boyle, Alan Browne and Eoin Doyle are on the books there.
Interestingly, the current Preston chairman is Peter Ridsdale, the man remembered with little fondness at Elland Road. Ridsdale's role at Preston may have something to do with the short odds on Robbie arriving there.
