There's no doubt that one of the big stories of the NFL off-season was Michael Sam's entry into the 2014 draft. When he was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round, Sam became the first active openly gay player in the NFL. Given it's significance, Sam's entry into the league understandably made headlines.
Then it died down a bit. At the end of the day, Sam was a low pick in the draft and he needed to knuckle down and earn a spot on the Rams' final roster. Of course, his status has made him high profile, particularly when measured against his ability. But after the initial reaction to the fact that he was gay, the attention was focused on what happened on the field. His sack on Johnny Manziel at the weekend was a prime example of that.
However, on Tuesday's Sport Centre, ESPN reporter Josina Anderson took a significant step away from what Sam does on the field. Anderson was reporting on the possibility that the defensive end may be cut from the Rams ahead of the new season and included as part of that report was a rather in depth expose of Sam's showering habits, including inside information from an unnamed teammate.
At the beginning of the piece, Anderson reports that defensive tackle Kendall Langford said that Sam "is simply just one of the guys". She then goes on to quote the unnamed player who told her that "Sam is respecting our space", before explaining that said unnamed player "seems to think that Sam is waiting to kinda take a shower as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable".
Everyone understands why Sam is high profile and, for that, the possibility that he could be cut is certain to make news but why the fuck that relates to his showering schedule is anyone's guess.
