Sources in the US have confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has won his appeal against the indefinite suspension which had seen him miss the majority of this NFL season, and has been reinstated to the league.
The news will come as a surprise to those who felt that the NFL had finally gotten something correct regarding the issue of domestic violence which is an all too common problem for the league, and after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's initial verdict of a two game suspension which was met with outrage from pundits and fans alike, Goodell then came to a decision on September 8 to ban Rice indefinitely, which the three-time NFL Pro Bowl running back decided to appeal in an attempt to rescue his playing career.
The decision to overturn the ban means that Ray Rice is eligible to return to NFL action, although he is a free agent after his release by the Baltimore Ravens, and it will be interesting to see if any NFL team decides to offer Rice, an undoubtedly talented player, a contract due to the media circus that will no doubt follow suit.
