Paul O'Donovan won gold at the World Rowing Championships today with a fairly outrageous performance. He absolutely blew his opponents away to emerge victorious, and make his luggage just that little bit heavier before heading home to Skibbereen in County Cork to what will undoubtedly be a hero's welcome.
O'Donovan spoke about that homecoming with Trevor Welch on Cork's 96FM today, and said that the town would need an extension to cater for all of the people who'd be attending
O'Donovan also spoke to RTE's Saturday Sport after his win, and described "feeling good" even as he moved away from the field-an ominous sign to any of his rivals in the coming years. There were plenty there from Skib to cheer him on, including his silver medal-winning partner and brother, Gary.
But it wasn't all plain sailing-or rather, rowing. At least not by O'Donovan's admission (he said he rowed like a 'gobshite' during the week). And it wouldn't be an O'Donovan medal without a memorable soundbite to accompany the success.
