Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended for the rest of the NFL season after testing positive for marijuana. He is also not allowed to train with the Browns or attend team functions.
The NFL star apologised and vented his frustrations in a recent statement.
I’d like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans
I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didn’t exercise better discretion and judgment in my case. I would like to sincerely thank the people who have been incredibly supportive of me during this challenging time, including my family, my agent, my union, my legal team, and the Cleveland Browns staff.
Gordon has faced multiple drug suspensions both in college and in the NFL. He led the league in yards receiving last season despite serving a two-game suspension for another drug violation. In order to play for the Browns this season he had to pass one drugs test, which he failed.
It was thought that the NFL might have shown leniency towards Gordon after the uproar over Ray Rice receiving a meagre two-game suspension for domestic violence against his girlfriend. Especially since cannabis is legal in two states and decriminalised everywhere else in America.
Gordon is a massive blow for the Browns this season who will be looking for one of their other offensive players to pick up the slack in the absence of their star.
