Lower League Fans

Update - Leeds lost 1-0 and need to beat Bristol Rovers next week to go up.

Supporting a Man Utd or a Chelsea must be fun, being able to watch a game or two each week on TV and mixing it up with the Barca and Milans of this world. But the drama of the Champions league and the top of the premier league table can't compete with the future of your chosen club hanging in the balance, the ups and downs of what used to be the auto windscreens trophy and the joy and pain of the lower league playoffs.

As a Leeds supporter I sit today glued to a live stream of the game at the valley where we need a win while also needing a victory for Tranmere who are hosting everybody's least favourite team Millwall - and with that will come automatic promotion to the English second tier.

Being a lower league fan helps you reacquaint yourself with the likes of Ian Harte who has hit double figures this year playing left back with Carlsile, Christian Dailly who commanded big transfer fees in his day is still playing, at Charlton and then there's the future of football, Wes Hoolohan, the old Shelbourne winger who is now helping Norwich to the League One Championship.

You get to go to Wembley and see it packed with real fans albeit from Doncaster, you see old top flight heroes make a quiet exit from the game every few months and you feel the grit and passion that those supporting Lower League clubs display when defending themselves against the easy switch to a premiership team.

I'd rather be watching Leeds take on Charlton having seen them reach the heights of the Champions League Semi's and still being in the Title hunt in March than support an Aston Villa or a Spurs who make do with the odd Carling Cup Final appearance.

Lesson here is - highs and lows are better than mid table obscurity.

Its still nil all at the Valley with 20mins left and a 19 year old called Sanchez Watt on loan from Arsenal has come on. League one has never been so exciting.
