Javier Hernandez thought he'd put Bayer Leverkusen ahead against Spurs early in the second half tonight. A cross was slid low to the back post. Chicharito came steaming in.
He met the ball but didn't get it to the net. Hugo Lloris, seemingly taken out of the picture by the cross, recovered to make a stunning save.
He lay on the ball like a hurling goalkeeper, trying to prevent a cluster of forwards shunting it over the line. This may have convinced both Hernandez and the crowd that the ball had crossed the line.
Chicharito blew a gasket and momentarily forgot that goalline technology is now in operation. He berated the behind the goal official as if he were to blame.
Full credit to the goalline official, he remained as impassive as a Buckingham Palace guard. Staring straight ahead as Hernandez pleaded and harrumphed and gestured like a wronged Italian.
