Jose Aldo may perhaps be counting his chickens, but the featherweight champion of the UFC has promised a big announcement after he defends his title against Conor McGregor at UFC 189 on July 11 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Speaking to Sherdog.com, Aldo claims that he knows what his next move after McGregor is, and that the UFC know too.
One step at a time, I have a tough fight with McGregor, and that´s my goal now. After that fight, you will know what is gonna happen. The UFC knows, I know, and everything is already set. As soon as I beat McGregor, you will know what´s gonna be my next step.
It seems like a bit of a contradiction to say "One step at a time" and then "As soon as I beat McGregor" in the same sentence, but whatever, the pressing issue is what that announcement could be.
The first thought that comes to mind is a superfight with Anthony Pettis, provided Pettis can defend his title against Rafael Dos Anjos this weekend at UFC 185. Aldo has publicly stated his dislike for the weight-cut that he currently has to undertake in the featherweight division, and at 155 the Brazilian could be a scary prospect. Should Aldo beat McGregor, then there isn't much left for him to prove at 145, and the same can be said for Pettis, so a superfight between the two champions would be a one hell of a spectacle.
Conor McGregor was unavailable to comment on this news, but we imagine his reaction looked something like this...
