Just over ten years ago, Jermaine Pennant started for Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan. This season, he will be lining out for Billericay Town in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
The former England Under-21 international joins the club, that already has former Premier League stalwarts Paul Konchesky and Jamie O'Hara on the club's books. Last year, they finished in eighth place in the division, which is two tiers below the Conference.
In recent years, Pennant has had spells in India and Singapore, before returning to England in January, where he played with Bury on a short-term contract.
Owned by local man Glenn Tamplin, he appointed himself as manager in the second-half of last season, following a string or poor results. The club gained global notoriety when the first team were recorded singing the R. Kelly song The World's Greatest before a match.
Pennant's deal has yet to be officially confirmed by the club, but has been widely teased by Tamplin in recent days. Reported to be on wages on £3,000, he will be one of the highest paid players in non-league football.
So Billericay Town sign Jermaine Pennant. They are now spending over £30k a week on their players at Step 3.
