The 26 year old Dubliner has played for a succession of clubs in England including Stoke City, Oldham Athletic, Swindon Town and Birmingham City.

He has enjoyed a stellar season with Aberdeen this year as the club have done well to remain within a respectable distance of Celtic with five games remaining.

In spite of his fantastic season, Rooney told RTE that he didn't believe he should be in the Ireland squad. He said if he kept scoring goals, a call-up would come.

Previous winners of the award include Gazza, Ally McCoist and Henrik Larsson.
