The Galway Plate (5.30pm) is one of the features of the Galway Festival but can be a tricky race to find the winner. It’s a very open renewal and in fact when we opened the book on the race, four horses were sharing the top spot but money pushed Carlingford Lough into the lead.
My opinion leans against the market on this one as I thought Carlingford Lough would have been well able to get his head in front last time out when second to Miss Pepperpot. He certainly has ability but I am always cautious backing horses that don’t give 100%.
A horse I do like the look of for this race is Pride Of The Artic. Ridden by his usual partner Andrew Leigh, the pair won four races on the trot last year including the Latin Quarter Chase here at the festival. The course and distance winner had a spin on the flat at Leopardstown last time out, which should have him spot on for today’s contest. He’s a nice big price and definitely worth an each way gamble at 16/1.
Elsewhere on the card I think Jayed Jidan will win the Maiden Stakes (7.10pm). He is trained by Dermot Weld who has won a staggering nine of the last eleven renewals of the race. He looks to have the best form on the card and will add to Demot’s tally this week.
Just four runners will line up for the penultimate contest and I think Luna Forest (7/2), trained by Tracey Collins could be worth a shot. Megan Carberry is claiming seven off her back and the yard are in form.

With 5 runners in 8 of today’s races there’s a good chance Dermot Weld can build on the winners he has had at Galway this week. Ladbrokes will be refunding on all losing horses as a free bet in any race where Dermot Weld has a winner.
