FIFA President Sepp Blatter has suggested that in the future, football will be played on other planets. The far seeing Swiss official furnished delegates with his wondrous vision of an 'Inter-Planetary Cup'
We shall wonder if one day our game is played on another planet? Why not? Then we will not only have a World Cup, we will have interplanetary competitions. Why not?
While this idea is not quite as ludicrous as the one held by many on the FIFA executive committee - that Qatar could be capable of holding a World Cup within a decade - it will nonetheless add to the general air of bemusement surrounding the fact that he continues to lead football's governing body.
While conspiracy theorists have sometimes asserted otherwise, the playing resources of the other planets are scant compared with the riches available to planet Earth. We suspect that when the 'Inter-Planetary Cup' does roll around, and knowing FIFA that will likely be 2026, it could be a rather lopsided tournament.
