Conor McGregor fighting Floyd Mayweather took a step closer to reality this morning.
The UFC lightweight champion has issued a statement announcing that he has signed a contract to fight Mayweather.
Heads now turn to see if the unbeaten boxer will finalise his side of the deal.
McGregor's statement was issued via his website, The Mac Life.
It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management.
The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.
McGregor's statement came in addition to an appearance by Dana White on TNT's coverage of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
The UFC president said McGregor's part of the deal was done and he will now get to work on Mayweather.
The McGregor side is done, I'm starting to work on the Mayweather side now.
I'm not saying the fight will happen but I've got one side done and now it's time to work on the other.
If we can come to a deal with Haymon and Mayweather, the fight's going to happen.
If there were any doubt, White clarified that the fight would be 'straight up boxing'.
