Joe McGuire was probably the most disappointed man in Britain after coming agonizingly close to cashing outon his £2 bet for £10 million. Escape To Glory was the last horse in a 6 race bet that very nearly came up trumps - the horse lost by a length - despite correctly predicting the previous five races with perfect accuracy the loss meant that Joe walked away without the £10 million.
The Scoop6 bet works similarly to the National Lottery in that punters aim to pick all six winners - a clean sweep takes the pot which rolls over if no one wins.
More than 250,000 punters tried their luck, hoping to become an instant millionaire by landing the biggest pot in racing history. The ex-jockey turned decorator Joe had placed four £2 Scoop6 bets. By the time the last race came around, he had two horses that could have won him the money, unfortunately for him they came 6th and 2nd.
Joe had a pretty solid plan in place had he managed to scoop the jackpot
I was planning to move to Dubai with Nicole Scherzinger but that dream’s all over now.
When the last leg came around I had to have a beer to calm my nerves. I was sat right on the edge of my couch.
It wasn't all doom and gloom for Joe - Escape To Glory’s runner-up spot helped land him a place-pot return of around £1,700; that's a week in Dubai with one of Nicole Scherzinger's distant relatives.
He is definately Britain's unluckiest punter.
