Attention aspiring sports journalists: Balls.ie will be running an eight-week course in Dublin entitled 'Sportswriting in the Digital Age' that will run on Monday nights starting the 18th of February.
The course will be a valuable experience for both for aspiring sports journalists looking to improve their craft and people who love reading, writing and talking about sports. The course will attempt to provide a thorough overview of the evolution of writing about athletes, the games they play and the people who watch them. We will study the golden era of American sportswriting (featuring writers like AJ Liebling, WC Heinz, Red Smith), the revolution in the genre in the '60s & ‘70s in the New Journalism era and the future of the form in the digital age.
The aim of the course will be to turn students into better sportswriters, mostly through reading the greats, but also by doing actual reporting. There will be a number of short assignments and students will develop a longer piece over the length of the course. There will also be a number of guest speakers. This course is ideal for people who already publishing sportswriting either in newspapers or online, those looking to make a start in the profession and those who simply enjoy writing about sport.
The course will be run by Donny Mahoney. On top of being editor and co-founder of Balls.ie, Mahoney has published journalism with the New York Times, the LA Times, the Independent (UK), the Dublin Review, and the Irish Times and others. He was also taught longform nonfiction writing courses in Dublin in the past as well.
The cost of the course will be €210. To register or receive more information on the course, email [email protected] and title the email 'Sportswriting'.
