Last weekend Portuguese coastal town of Nazaré saw surfers from across the globe attempt to enter record books by surfing the largest wave in the world.

The video of the day's events shows the sheer scale of these dramatic behemoths which were so big that the surfers had to be towed into position by jet skis before gliding down the water face.
However the mentality of these record chasers has to be questioned with a frightening video of one woman, Maya Gabeira, falling on her decent and breaking her leg while knocking herself unconsciousness upon impact with the water.

The strength of the sea was so strong that it delayed her rescue for several minutes and saw her vanish beneath the surf numerous times before eventually being dragged to safety.
