You may have seen some reports about Dublin hotels ramping up their prices for Croke Park concerts. 50% increase, 100% increase? Terrible stuff, how about a 3500%?
Going to Cheltenham and dropping shed loads of cash on anything and everything became something of an Irish tradition back in the time when that thing that we don't speak of was still roaring. The amount of money you lost/spent/threw away was a status symbol akin to a Rolex or a dodgy Bulgarian apartment.
The gambling aspect was expensive but the Cheltenham accommodation was an entirely different matter. You'd hear stories of a friend of a friend who had a contact at some hotel. This individual was like Don Corleone in the months leading up to March. However, no amount of ass kissing would do, if you didn't book your accommodation while you were in Cheltenham the year before, you were screwed.
But fear not, times have changed. Things are getting better with the economy but not to the extent that everywhere within a 50 mile radius of Prestbury Park is booked solid. There's still bargains to be had. Take for example, this delightful two bed apartment in the centre of Cheltenham town with a balcony, a flat screen TV and a bathtub.
Not too shabby at all. It sleeps four so if you pool your money you should be fine. Think again. For the full five night enjoyment you'll have to shell out €6000 each.
Just as an aside, we picked the same time frame two weeks after the festival and there's quite a drop in price.
All in all, just a 3500% price increase. We just feel sorry for the owners, ten years ago this would have been snapped up instantly.
