A delighted Guenther Steiner couldn’t contain his excitement for Kevin Magnussen after he claimed pole for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

In a crazy qualifying session in wet conditions, Haas claimed their first pole as Magnussen is placed to cause a big upset in tomorrow’s sprint race.

Max Verstappen will start in second place, while George Russell, whose spin in the rain led to a red flag and confirmed Magnussen’s pole position, will start in third.

Lando Norris will start in fourth place ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Saniz, while Alpine duo Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso claimed sixth and seventh respectively.

Lewis Hamilton will be disappointed to be starting tomorrow’s race in eight place, ahead of Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, it’s hard not to be delighted for Magnussen and indeed Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, who became a big fan favourite on the popular drive to survive.

After a difficult run of form for Haas, Guenther Steiner claimed it was not down to luck that his team claimed pole today.

“You're scared to almost dream about it. The whole team is trying hard since seven years ago, and circumstances led us to pull this one off, and it was not luck, it was well-deserved from the driver and the team being on the same tyre.

He was first out there, you could say that gave him an advantage, but he had a disadvantage as he had nobody else to gage with. He put a lap down, and it stuck.

The last races were not good for him, he always had some issues. Everybody went out there quick on the sticks because we know the rain was coming but he can do what can do. The other cars were only 10, 15,20 seconds behind us, but they couldn’t do what he did.

When you have soup you have to have a spoon with you, and he had the spoon ready today."
