The weekend of the 11th and 12th of December is set to be one of the biggest in UFC history. McGregor vs Aldo, Weidman vs Rockhold and Edgar vs Mendes, it's the stuff of dreams for fight fans. However, there's always the possibility that we may not get to see all of them. And if you believe Conor McGregor, it's almost a probability.
The Dubliner has not let up with his belief that Jose Aldo will once again be forced into withdrawing from their highly anticipated bout and if that happens, it appears McGregor knows the alternative.
The announcement of the match-up between the best of the rest in the featherweight division, Edgar and Mendes, certainly caused some heads to be scratched. The pair will face off in Vegas on the Ultimate Fighter finale card, just one night before UFC 194.
Given McGregor's assertions that Aldo will inevitably pull out of the fight, many fans suggested that the Edgar vs Mendes bout was scheduled as something of an insurance policy with either fighter ready to step in should McGregor's prediction come true.
While it's not being said that that's the only reason for the Edgar vs Mendes match-up, it seems there may be something to it. Given wisdom had suggested that Edgar would be the man to step in and now the 33 year old has cleared up the speculation with confirmation from the main man himself.
If someone gets hurt I’m the guy stepping in. And that’s from Dana White. You can print that in bold letters.
Obviously we're still hoping to see both those key featherweight bouts but, if worst comes to the worst, then McGregor vs a no excuses, fighting fit, Edgar would be the next best thing.
