We're still awaiting official confirmation, but it very much looks like the headline of UFC 205, the first UFC event at New York's Madison Square Garden, will be contested by Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor with the UFC lightweight belt on the line.
Apparently the only stumbling block in the discussions is what to do with the featherweight title, as McGregor wants to keep it and attempt to become the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two weight classes at the same time, but obviously that would upset a few others who wish to see him defend his current belt.
Should the fight go ahead, it would be a fascinating encounter. Since singing from Bellator, Alvarez has looked increasingly better in each fight culminating in a total destruction of Rafael Dos Anjos.
Alvarez is a well-rounded fighter, and on the Joe Rogan Experience's Fight Companion for UFC Fight Night 94 last weekend, this potential mash-up was discussed between Rogan and Brendan Schaub who were both of the opinion that this is a tough matchup.
Interesting points, particularly regarding the endurance of Alvarez, who has shown that he is relentless in his pressure and will not let up over five rounds.
Eddie Alvarez is also an outstanding wrestler, which is the main reason that makes him a headache for Conor, but the Dubliner showed impressive takedown defence against Nate and will hoping to once again work his superior striking...
In summary, Conor McGregor vs Eddie Alvarez is going to be a seriously interesting fight if it does go ahead. Now we wait for the official announcement.
