Cody Garbrandt turned a lot of heads in the MMA community with his performance in the co-main event of UFC 207, as he defeated Dominick Cruz via unanimous decision to be crowned the new bantamweight champion.
In the build-up to the fight, Cruz gave a very convincing argument as to why the fifth-ranked challenger in the division would not be able to cause him damage, but after the reality turned out to be very different, Cruz was dignified in his response, making no excuses for his performance which he maintains he was not disappointed in.
While you usually hear athletes in Cruz's position stress that they need time to process what just happened, the former champ was adamant that he would be back, and even listed examples of champions that have overcome adversity while outlining his intent.
We're all competitors here, and it's a game of inches. He beat me by a couple of inches tonight, and that's OK.
Well said.
TJ Dillashaw's comments after defeating John Lineker did not go down to well with Dana White, who made light of the fact that former champion said it was 'rigged' if he didn't get the next title shot after the event, but now the big question is immediate rematch, or give TJ another crack?
White revealed that the decision has not yet been made, but claimed that if it is a rematch between Garbrandt and Cruz, then Dillashaw will fight the winner, so it will be interesting to see if he will be willing to wait his turn while that fight happens. Although he may not have a choice.
