When 'Dada 5000' was hospitalised due to cardiac arrest after a crazy fight against Kimbo Slice at Bellator 149, many questioned whether the fight should have been allowed to take place at all.
There was very little MMA technique on display as the two men brawled their way through nearly three rounds of combat, but the viewing numbers broke records for the organisation, while also drawing fierce criticism from many corners of the worldwide sporting media.
Speaking ahead of his title defence against Urijah Faber at 199, UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz was asked how he felt about fights on organisations such as Bellator that perhaps do not showcase the elite of the sport, and in typical fashion, his views were absolutely bang on the money.
To be honest, that's a completely different demographic. That's the internet sensation crossing over to watch those fights, casual fans, so the question really isn't 'Why are people watching that?' the question is how do I make those people intrigued with me?
All I can do is continue to do my best, and then find what is making those gues interesting. And I think what makes that interesting is the 'ghetto' side of it a little bit. It's just like, they don't care. They don't care if they have it at an event in front of thousands of people, or in a lunchbox somewhere, it doesn't matter to them, and I think there's a certain appeal to that.
Once again, Cruz in front of a camera delivers.
The entire interview was him catching out the media's attempt to try and get him to say something, but also delivering some excellent insights and quotes along the way.
Regarding Kimbo vs Dada, he wasn't going to call it a circus like many other fighters have done, but instead he found the intrigue in that type of fight, and pointed out that with skilled fighters such as Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz adopting a similar style in terms of "not giving a fuck" the numbers will always be better.
