Yoel Romero is going to be very, very upset.
Since Georges St-Pierre confirmed his intention to return to the UFC there has been a lot of speculation as to who he will face. While the most popular choice for the fans seemingly a bout with Nick Diaz who is still waiting for an opponent after being cleared to fight late last year, but a title fight was also being discussed as Michael Bisping seemed very open to the idea.
The main issue with that plan was how harsh it would be on Yoel Romero, who looked to have done enough to earn himself a crack at Bisping and the title with his obliteration of Chris Weidman at UFC 205.
Romero caught wind of the possibility of a GSP fight being arranged, and accused Bisping of ducking him after seeing what he did to Weidman, and we can expect those accusations to ramp up again after Dana White today confirmed that Georges St-Pierre is getting an immediate title shot against Bisping.
Speaking on ESPN's Sport Centre, White confirmed that it's happening, and that we'll see a press conference this Friday.
Is this harsh on Yoel Romero? Yes.
Is the decision to grant GSP a title shot at middleweight strange? Also yes.
Should this be a surprise? No.
The UFC have made it perfectly clear that they call the shots and if a fight has the potential to generate hype, the deal will be done. GSP, a legend of the sport, returning and taking on someone who can sell a fight as well as Bisping? It's clear to see why they want this fight to happen.
It doesn't really make sense, but that's the way it is. Roll on Friday, this press conference should be a good one.
