UFC president Dana White wants the US Anti Doping Agency to come down hard on former Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones over his failed drug test in the build up to his bout champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.
Jones (24-0-1), failed a urine test for a steroid collected the day of the weigh-in at UFC 214, the result of which was only revealed after Jones stopped Cormier with a devastating head kick in round three to claim the light heavyweight title.
Jones was immediately stripped of belt upon failing the test and will be suspended by USADA in due course, but the UFC president featured on ESPN's Sportscenter yesterday and appeared to put pressure on USADA to come down heavy on the former champion,
Should the punishment be harsher?
Yeah I don’t disagree with that but USADA handles that, we’re out of that business, we leave it to the professionals.
Michael Bisping believes Jon Jones should have a lifetime ban and that is something you have control over?
Legally USADA would have to handle this thing and whatever USADA says he is going to have to follow that punishment because they work hand in hand with the athletic commission whether its Nevada or California or whatever it might be, which is essentially the government. So the government works with USADA and they figure out what the ban is going to be but if they came back that Jon Jones would get a three month suspension, legally I owe him a fight. I legally owe him a fight. I have a contract with the guy.
I guess is there a thought to put clauses in where you break your contract if you test positive for something.
It is a lot more complicated than that, in a perfect world, that sounds awesome but this isn’t a perfect world.
The UFC president would like the American to be banned at a minimum for the remainder of his contract, as once the suspension is served, the UFC is no longer obliged to offer him a fight
The New York man has twice previously failed a drug test, the last of which occurred in 2016 when Jones defeated American Ovince Saint Preux for the interim light heavyweight title.
