It seems that the next logical fight for the UFC bantamweight title is Dominick Cruz vs Urijah Faber, as both fighters would love the chance to have another crack at each other, and it appears to be the only viable option aside from an immediate rematch for TJ Dillashaw.
Faber's Team Alpha Male teammate Cody Garbrandt spilled the beans on The California Kid's plans to go out at the very top of the game earlier in the week when he said the following while talking to bloodyelbow.com:
If Urijah would be the champion I think he would beat Cruz in the next fight. We talked about it before, he’ll go out as champion, retire. Urijah has done so much for the sport and been a world champion, he’s been the Featherweight king at the WEC - and people seem to forget Urijah ruled that era for a very long time, fought some of the best fighters. What else would he have to prove? You win the title and go out, storybook ending. Boom, done.
And now Faber appears to be putting that plan into action. Both fighters have publicly expressed their desire to fight for the title in the very near future, but Urijah has now put pressure on Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita to set a date in an Instagram post filled with shots at the current champ Dominick Cruz:
Urijah's appearance alongside Conor McGregor as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter has done wonders for his smack-talking:
And the reason he is alive is because there are rules in mma and i was forced to let him live.
That is straight out of the McGregor guide to pissing your opponent off.
It certainly would be an incredible way to call a close to a fantastic career. Win the title, announce your retirement, drop the mic and ride off into the sunset.
We'll wait and see now what Dana has to say, and of course what Cruz has to say in response to those 'glass champ' barbs, which themselves were in response to Cruz suggesting he was the only thing left after all of Faber's teammates deserted him. They don't like each other very much, these two.
