In the coming years we may well look back on this day as a turning point in the history of the Irish nation. Who's to say what's possible in the future but if anti-democracy forces decide to make a play to overthrow the Irish government then perhaps now is the time.
Ireland system of proportional representation may be held up as one of the most democratic forms of governance in the world but we also have a system whereby a government committee are forced to debate whether to put Conor McGregor's face on a €1 euro coin. And all because one lad thought it would be gas to send a petition in to Leinster House.
Don't get us wrong, it's hilarious that it can cause this much fuss. All you can do is sit back and laugh and you better believe that Conor McGregor is doing just that. He may have a lightweight title fight to worry about but when he got wind of all this coin talk, there was no way he would let it go without addressing it.
It would be a true honour for me to be immortalised on the €1 coin!
Thank you to my fans for the petition!Let's go Oireachtas! Vote YES :-)— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) January 13, 2016
We're not sure the likes of Michael Healy-Rae, Mary Mitchell O'Connor or Aengus Ó Snodaigh (who all sit on the committee) will be swayed by that kind of blatant electioneering but you never know.

In other words, 'vote for me and the good times will keep on rolling'. Someone's been listening to Enda Kenny. But while we're at it, we'd like to put this design forward for consideration.
