Less than a year ago UFC supremo Dana White stated that there'd never be women fighters in the UFC. Last night saw 2 women fight in the main event at UFC 157, as Ronda Rousey fought Liz Carmouche.
So why the change of heart for Dana White? See that's the issue. It's not about the heart for Dana White and UFC, it's about the money and in Ronda Rousey, they see somebody they can market to the millions of pay-per-view buyers they need to remain profitable. Rousey is a former Olympic medalist in Judo and had won all 6 of her previous MMA fights in devasting fashion. She's confident, opinionated and, oh by the way, extremely attractive. She was signed to a UFC contract in August last year. In July she appeared on the cover of the Body Issue of ESPN: The Magazine.
White has a great feel for what his fans want and he clearly feels they want Rousey and other women fighters. Last night she won again won in the first round with her favourite arm bar submission move. The only threat to her becoming a huge UFC star is lack of good quality opponents. Despite UFC trying to hype it, she barely looks out of breath in this post-match interview
