The referee from the tragic contest between Joao Carvalho and Charlie Ward has come out to defend himself against murmurings that he should have stopped the fight earlier than he did.
Mariusz Domasat, an experienced MMA ref, and himself an accomplished fighter - believes he did nothing wrong and stopped the fight when he was supposed to. He told the Star that he had no reason to stop the fight earlier than he did:
If you watch the fight you see clearly there was no reason to stop the fight earlier.
I stopped the fight when there was a reason to stop the fight, when the fighter wasn't willing to fight anymore, that's it.
Conor McGregor was one of the people in attendance who said that he thought that the fight should have been stopped earlier, but Domasat says that "everyone who has any idea about MMA knows the fight was stopped at the exact proper time."
I am an experienced referee and part of the Irish Amateur Pankration Association of Safe MMA and I know what I am doing.
