Well-respected boxing journalist Max Kellerman appeared on ESPN's First Take today to give his take on the furore surrounding Paulie Malignaggi quitting the McGregor training camp. Malignaggi announced this morning that he was walking out of the camp, after photos were leaked showing him lying on the canvas during a sparring session against McGregor.
McGregor, who is scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) in the boxing ring on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas, had twice used Malignaggi as a sparring partner.
Max Kellerman cut right through the bullshit perfectly on ESPN today:
If he is pushed down and they take a picture and they release it or leak it to the press, it appears that McGregor has knocked Malignaggi down.
I am anticipating some kind of story about how Floyd got knocked down in sparring or some other kind of story that makes Floyd appear vulnerable and here the opposite thing is happening, a story is coming out of McGregor's training camp that makes him look strong and the reason they have to do that is because people who know that this is a great spectacle but it is not competitive, it's spectacle. That's all it is.
