What is it about UFC events on this island?
In October of last year the Fight Night card for Dublin was decimated by injuries, robbing those who bought tickets of two seriously enticing scraps between Dustin Poirier and Joseph Duffy, and Stipe Miocic vs Ben Rothwell.
And now it's happening again. With Gunnar Nelson forced to withdraw from the main event, many were looking forward to Neil Seery vs Ian McCall to give the fan favourite from Dublin the perfect send off in his last fight before retirement, but sadly due to sudden illness that fight won't happen.
Speaking to MMAJunkie minutes after learning that the fight, which he had gone through a full camp and weight cut for, was canceled, Seery admitted that he nearly broke down in tears after hearing the news. However, the Dublin man has put his retirement plans on hold.
I'm not going out like that.
That will come as a relief to Irish MMA fans who were wishing to give Seery the perfect send-off in Belfast, and while it is extremely frustrating that we won't get to see him fight McCall tomorrow, at least we'll get to see him in the octagon one last time.
Of course, the likeliness of that fight being in Ireland were he can get the love from the crowd that he deserves is low, but we'll have to see what the UFC have in store. The Neil Seery retirement party will happen, it's just a shame it won't be the special occasion that UFC Belfast promised to be.
