One thing that anyone who has watched Joseph Duffy since his emergence in the UFC, in particular his pre-fight and post-fight interviews, will take away, is the opinion that the Donegal native is a really good guy.
He's calm, collected, and considerate when dealing with questions about others, of which he has to deal with an outrageous amount considering a certain win on his record, and while he is fully confident in his ability to rise to the top of his weight class, he could never be accused of arrogance or cockiness.
It comes as no surprise then that his comments in the wake of a defeat at the hands of Dustin Poirier on the Fight Pass undercard at UFC 195 have been typically admirable, as while we wouldn't expect a fighter to spiral into negativity following a unanimous decision loss, he has immediately looked for the silver lining from a disappointing night for him personally.
Speaking to MMAJunkie.com, Duffy explained how he's watched the fight once since it happened, and will get back to training shortly:
He was closing the gap quick and I got drawn into his fight, but it’s all easy in hindsight. Fair play to him, he came to fight and did a good job to get the win.
I watched it back (Monday), so I’ll probably leave it until the dust has settled and have a good study of it. I probably won’t mess around and will get back to the gym and back to work.
And on whether or not his first loss will relieve any pressure in future fights, the Irishman admitted that he was looking on the bright side:
There’s definitely that side to it, and it’s a real positive way of looking at it.
Regardless of the result, I was going to do the same thing: I was going to take six months off, work on my game and enjoy my training because I’ve spent the full year in camp and I’m only back in MMA just over a year and a half now.
This fight showed a few chinks that I’ve got to fix, so if anything, it is a life-saver. Instead of papering over the cracks, we’re going to fix the problem.
No excuses, just lessons to be learned.
We're eagerly anticipating the announcement of Duffy's next fight as we can't wait to see him back in the octagon and back moving up the rankings at 155.
