Drug testing is a huge talking point in modern mixed martial arts, especially now with a number of high profile stars such as Jon Jones and Anderson Silva being involved in drug scandals and creating issues for the UFC.
While the majority of drug bans and test failure stories that occur are in relation to performance enhancing drugs, recreational drugs have also been a problem for a number of fighters, perhaps most noticeably Nick Diaz.
Joe Rogan, the much loved colour commentator for the UFC and host of the ridiculously popular Joe Rogan Experience podcast used his weekly show to make a bold claim about just how many UFC fighters smoke weed, and have to be very careful when it comes to competition time.
Here is a weird thing about Martial Arts: a tremendous amount of UFC fighters smoke pot. I mean a massive amount, where it is a huge issue for them involving drug tests. They have to stop smoking weed for the last four weeks or so to pass drug tests.
More UFC fighters smoke pot than don't smoke pot.
That just can't be true.
More top-level athletes in the World's most famous MMA organisation are smoking weed than those who aren't? That seems crazy to think. We're not trying to get into a discussion over the legality or medical benefits of marijuana, but as Rogan says with drug testing being such a massive issue for the organisation, it's mad that so many would risk their eligibility to fight.
It will be interesting to see if there is any follow up on this, or reaction from the UFC fighters themselves.
