The thinking following Frankie Edgar's emphatic win against Chad Mendes on the night prior to UFC 194 - where Conor McGregor defeated Jose Aldo - was that Edgar was surely next in line for a shot at the featherweight belt.
Edgar KO'd Mendes in the first round while Jose Aldo was KO'd after 13 seconds. Given how much weight is put on the quality of performance in the UFC, Edgar seemed the obvious choice to face McGregor next.
Edgar was then left in limbo as the UFC made the near-unprecedented decision to allow the Dubliner move up in weight class for a title shot with Rafael dos Anjos while also retaining his featherweight crown.
Now, the 34-year-old Edgar's chances of getting a chance to face McGregor would seem to have taken another blow.
This is from ESPN Brazil:
"I love Jose (Aldo). I'll call him today (Wednesday) and we'll talk to decide who's next for him," said White.
Asked if the conversation would be to set a new fight for the belt, White was emphatic. "Yes," he replied.
So, Jose Aldo might be getting that rematch sooner than was thought.
Given how active McGregor wants to be in his career right now - there is talk of four fights a year. A rematch between him and Aldo would certainly be a possibility for some time during the summer.
