Good news for Conor McGregor fans as his next fight is likely to be for the featherweight belt, according to UFC president Dana White.
The featherweight belt goes on the line at UFC 179 on October 25 when Chad Mendes takes on undisputed champion Jose Aldo. McGregor will be next in line for a crack at the title after Mendes, according to the UFC boss.
Here’s the thing: If you go down the list, every one of those guys has fought Jose Aldo already.
Conor hasn’t. So who do you line up next for the champ other than Conor? Everybody else has fought him.
There was some confusion yesterday when the Notorious tweeted that he would be facing Diego Sanchez in a lightweight bout at UFC 180 in Mexico. The winner of the inaugural season of reality TV show The Ultimate Fighter was due to fight Stormin' Norman Parke at the event but the Northern Irishman was forced to withdraw from the bout with injury.
So Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I went to dinner with him last night, and he said he wants to fight Diego Sanchez in Mexico at 155. I said, ‘You’re nuts. No way, we’ll get you a fight. You’ll be fighting soon enough.’ The kid just wants to fight,
He said him and Diego have been talking back and forth for a while and he wanted to fight him. We basically told him no and he went out and put that on Twitter anyway.
White has publicly stated that the UFC plans on returning to Dublin for an outdoor event in summer 2015. At the risk of getting everyone's hopes up, there is a chance McGregor could be fighting for the title in the Aviva next year.
