Anyone who knows even a little bit about mixed martial arts will tell you that when certain fights are announced, you just know that they will be fireworks. Donald Cerrone vs. Robbie Lawler is one of those fights.
Cowboy appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast last week where they talked all manner of things from the flat-earth conspiracy (seriously, look it up), hallucinogenic drugs and - most interestingly - who Cerrone's next opponent might be.
Cowboy - a former world title challenger in the lightweight division - has recently moved up to the welterweight bracket and has been in stunning form ever since. Following Cerrone's highlight reel finish of Rick Story at UFC 202 last month the Greg Jackson trained fighter said post-fight that he wants a shot at the gold belt currently sitting around lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez's waist. But with Alvarez looking to have a contest with Conor McGregor in his near future, that leaves Cerrone on the hunt for another dance parter.
Enter Robbie Lawler.
The former welterweight champion has always been a sort of 'clench fists, grit teeth' kind of fighter and, in a way, a mirror image of the style of fighting that Cowboy Cerrone brings with him to the cage. And now, as per Dana White himself, it looks like we'll get to see what happens when these two stand toe to toe and let their fists fly.

Cerrone might be disappointed that his next fight isn't for the lightweight title but a win over Lawler would catapult him towards the top of a welterweight division already packed to the brim with contenders. For Lawler, being the first person not named Rafael Dos Anjos to stop Cerrone in nearly four years would be a huge statement to get him back into the title picture.
Welterweight is once again one of the most exciting divisions in the UFC. With Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, Stephen Thompson, Lawler and maybe even Gunnar Nelson fighting to get to the top, there are exciting times ahead at 170lbs.
And that's before you even mention Georges St-Pierre.
