Following his annihilation of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, Conor McGregor's main concern in the Octagon was not the location of his new acquired lightweight belt - that was around his waist. Instead, he wanted to know where was his featherweight strap, the one won against Jose Aldo nearly a year ago.
McGregor made history with his win against Alvarez. He is the first UFC fighter to hold belts in different weight divisions simultaneously.
The Irish fighter was clearly angry in the Octagon as he was interviewed by Joe Rogan due to what he saw as the UFC's failure to ensure he was pictured with both belts immediately after the win.
At the post-fight press conference, McGregor explained what was going through his mind at that moment.
I was literally losing my head in there. I'd said I want to raise both belts. Get up on the cage with one on one shoulder and one on the other and they didn't have the belts.
I was in the cage and he was like 'Did you not bring your one?' I was like 'Get the brand new ones.' This is a multi-billion dollar company. I want to have the new ones sparkling when I arrive here. I'm glad that they went and got one.
Two minutes after voicing his displeasure, Dana White placed a second belt around McGregor's shoulder. It was not the featherweight belt, though. It was the welterweight one, momentarily borrowed from champion Tyron Woodley who had defended it shortly before hand in the co-main event.
Dana White explained what happened, while also denying that there had been any oversight on the UFC's behalf.
Just for the record, I'm not supposed to bring his belt. He's supposed to bring his belt. He's yelling at me because I don't have his belt. I'm like 'You're supposed to bring your belt and I give you the new belt'.
We went back there and Tyron Woodley gave us his belt. He got it back. He let us borrow his belt.
On Friday at both the official weigh-in and ceremonial weigh-in, there was clear animosity between McGregor and Woodley. It's somewhat surprising that Woodley allowed the UFC to borrow his belt, giving McGregor his moment of glory.
McGregor said during the press conference that he was aware that Woodley had been accommodating. Now a two-weight champion, the Dubliner alluded to perhaps one day taking a shot at the title currently held by Woodley.
I heard that. Maybe that's a sign of things to come.
