Earlier this year, Conor McGregor claimed that he was the first Irishman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, only for this to be soon corrected: Ronnie Delany had adorned the cover decades before. A few months later, McGregor appeared bollock naked on ESPN's Body Issue. Delany has not since come forward to say whether or not he made it to that particular cover.
Last night, McGregor had another milestone in the U.S. media: he was parodied on Saturday Night Live.
Last night's show was hosted by wrestler John Cena, and McGregor was parodied by comedian Alex Moffat in a quiz show entitled Where'd Your Money Go? in which they "attempt to teach financial security to some of the world's most ignorant millionaires".
Readers of a certain vintage will realise that the host is Keenan Mitchell, of Keenan and Kel fame. Mitchell played Charles Barkley, Cena played Rob Gronkowski and Bobby Moynihan acted as John Daly.
While they got McGregor's look reasonably well, but holy hell, the accent. It is horribly, horribly inaccurate: the kind of 'begorrah' shite you wouldn't hear in Crumlin, or indeed anywhere in Ireland as nobody talks like that.
It's reasonably funny, but they do hit a couple of stereotypes content-wise: they drop in references to Protestants and the IRA in the first segment with McGregor. We have to wait a few minutes for the leprechaun reference.
Cena is good, though, as is Mitchell:
