It was inevitable, but we couldn't be entirely sure when the day would finally come. Now we know: Conor McGregor will be stripped of his UFC Lightweight title this weekend.
Dana White confirmed that this weekend's bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway will put an end to the Irishman's reign as champion.
McGregor won the belt when he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in late 2016. That was the last time he entered the Octagon, meaning it has been nearly 18 months since he last had a mixed martial arts fight.
White, the President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, sounded confident of McGregor returning to action at some point this year, but was adamant that he will be stripped of his title.
Conor is losing the belt and these two are fighting for the belt. One of these guys [Nurmagomedov or Holloway] will be the champion. Tony is still the number one contender.
In typical McGregor fashion, the SBG fighter had a straightforward enough retort on Twitter:
You’s’ll strip me of nothing you’s do nothing cunts.
