It's an amazing thing to say but somehow "Let's give it up for the Trumps," may have been the least controversial thing Colby Covington said in his post-fight interview last night after defeating Robbie Lawler.
Covington beat Lawler by unaminous decision, practically guaranteeing himself a UFC Welterweight title shot in the process, but as impressive as his display was, his comments after the bout left a bitter taste in the mouth.
He began by serenading the Trumps, with Donald Jr and Eric Trump in attendance, as boos hissed out around the arena.
Not content with that, Covington then made a crass remark about UFC Hall of Famer, Matt Hughes.
In 2017 Hughes was in a near fatal crash when a train struck his truck at a rail crossing. Covington decided that last night was a good opportunity to remind everyone of it:
Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight. It’s a strong lesson Robbie should have learned a lesson from his buddy Matt Hughes. You stay off the tracks when the train is coming through, junior. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Trump train or the Colby train, get out the way.
The crowd in Newark made their feelings known and Covington fired back: "Hey I didn't buy a ticket to come here and see you, you bought a ticket to see me so shut up and let me finish my interview."
Hughes responed to Covington's jibe with a post on Instagram, saying "Not sure if @colbycovmma should have use my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight... Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin."
