The 2022 US Open gets underway on Thursday at The Country Club. With a number of players coming into the tournament in hot form, picking a winner from this stacked field will certainly not be easy.
Rory McIlroy will be looking to re-create his form which saw him win the Canadian Open last weekend and is the bookies favourite at 10/1 before teeing off tomorrow. Last year's champion Jon Rahm is sitting at 14/1, but it's another member of Europe's 2021 Ryder Cup team that Mallow golfer James Sugrue fancies to be in with a chance to win at Brookline.
Speaking on The Build Up in association with Ladbrokes, Sugrue tipped English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick to win this weekend:
"I think Matt Fitzpatrick, he won a US Amateur around that course. So he's going to have great memories of that place you know. Like it's a huge tournament. (He is ) super consistent. US Open you're going to have a lot of you know ten foot and in puts for probably a lot of the time might be par. His putting is super good."
Fitzpatrick is currently 25/1 to win the US Open and Sugrue also spoke about some bigger priced golfers that he also reckons could have a good week. Sugrue thinks Justin Rose, who was fantastic in his final round on Sunday in Ontario is in with a chance.
"Maybe someone at a bigger price, someone like Justin Rose.
"I think Matt Fitzpatrick but obviously Justin Rose as well, a former US Open champion. He's going to be a bit of a celebrity there this week. I think he's going to love it but I think I'm going to go with Matt Fitzpatrick."
Sugrue also singled out Patrick Cantlay and Dustin Johnson as other high odds potential winners.
"I know it's not an incredibly long shot but I saw DJ (Dustin Johnson) was 40/1. I thought that was a bit generous. Also Patrick Cantlay, I think he's like high 20s which I thought was very generous for Patrick Cantlay a player of his calibre. Anything outside of Justin Rose around 50s I'd be staying away from."
The 2013 US Open champion is 60/1 to win this year's competition.

James Sugrue also spoke about Rory McIlroy's chances at The Country Club and said if he plays well he will win. The 2019 Amateur Championship winner also said that Shane Lowry is the best in the world around the green.

"I think around the greens he's probably the best player in the world. I remember I played with him in a practise round for Portrush, he'd just throw balls down on the edge of every green and just hit like the filthiest chips that you'll ever see, just incredible.
"I'm hoping Shane has a brilliant week. I do love Shane, I think he's a class player. You know he's one of the best players in the world in my opinion."
James Sugrue hailed Rory McIlroy after his impressive Canadian Open win last week.
"I think Rory (McIlroy) is just the best player in the world you know. He shot a 62 final round [Sunday], finished birdie, birdie to win by two. There's not many in the world who could do that, under that pressure, on Sunday, in the final group. You wouldn't really look too far past Rory."
