Poor Attendance Speaks Volume After Another Defeat For Davy Fitz's Waterford

Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald has said the division his side play in next season is "irrelevant" after Waterford's loss to Wexford in Walsh Park on Sunday.

Waterford have won once so far this campaign and haven't won any of their last three. It's yet another mediocre campaign for Davy Fitz's side. They have only won three league games since he returned to the job. The poor start to this year means Waterford are resigned to playing in the league's second tier next year after the reformat of Division 1.

That doesn't seem to effect their manager however as Davy Fitzgerald, speaking post match on TG4 said this year is all about the championship and he'll use next week's match against Kilkenny to get more game time into some of his players.

We've championship 21st April so next week (against Kilkenny) is great for that, go out there and completely throw ourselves into it. Let's be straight the whole year is defined by what we do in championship. Whether we're in first or second tier of the league, that's irrelevant in my opinion. It's how we do in championship that's the thing.

We need to get the game time into certain fellas. There were six changes today, a number of them hadn't had any games in them and you can see it in a few of them. They need that time on the field, so next week is a help.

Davy Fitz doubles down on Championship

There was a poor attendance for the match at Walsh Park with only 3,571. It's a sign of frustration from the Waterford fans and Davy Fitz acknowledge that during his post match press conference.

Also during that conference Davy Fitzgerald doubled down on his point that championship is what this year is going to be defined by for Waterford. He even went as far as to say people won't talk about the league form no matter how well they do in the championship.

That's probably what our year is going to be judged on, being honest about it. If we happen to lose two or three games in the championship, will anyone talk about the league? No. If we happen to win two or three games, will they be talking about the league? No. Whatever bit of stick is coming for the week, we all have to take it and that's it,

Their first championship match comes up in six weeks' time as they face Cork at home in the Munster Championship on April 21st.
