Jockey Ricky Doyle gave his immediate reaction after winning the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse today aboard 150/1 shot Freewheelin Dylan, and he was understandably elated: "By god, I cannot believe it!", he said, speaking to RTÉ.
Freewheelin Dylan led the field for the majority of the race, and an immaculate finish saw him clear the final jumps and claim the win ahead of Run Wild Fred and Enjoy D'allen.
"I couldn't wait for the race to come, I was looking forward to having a spin on him," Doyle said, "...Dermot McLaughlin, what a man."
This is the second winner that Doyle has ridden with trainer McLaughlin.
Doyle felt just as incredulous during the race as he was in the interview: "I was trying to hear the lads snapping behind me, thinking, no way am I going this easy in an Irish national. I couldn't believe it."
"I don't care if I never ride another [national winner] again, I'm delighted."
