The US Women's Open got underway at Lancaster Country Club yesterday, with the field find the going rather tough at the infamous Pennsylvania golf venue.

The second major of the year would see very few low scores in the opening round. Japan's Yuka Saso would lead the field with a score -2, one of only four players to shoot under par on Thursday.

Cavan's Leona Maguire would card a +3 round of 73, leaving her in a tie for 35th place after the opening day's play.

However, the main story of the day came from current golf world no. 1 Nelly Korda.

Golf: World No. 1 cards a 10 on par-three at US Women's Open

Nelly Korda came into this tournament as one of the favourites, having already won five golf tournaments on the LPGA in 2024. That included the year's first major in the Chevron Championship.

In saying that, her challenge at the US Women's Open would unravel within the first three holes.

Having started her round on the 10th, the American would go on to card a scarcely believable score of 10 at the par-three 12th at Lancaster Country club.

The 25-year old would hit her tee shot into the bunker, before sending her second into the green-side water hazard. She would then hit two more shots into the water from the drop zone, before eventually finding the green and two-putting to record a septuple-bogey.

It was a difficult start to the tournament for Korda, who would find herself at +10 after the first nine holes of play. While she steady the ship somewhat from that point onwards, she would still finish the opening day's play with a score of +10.

This was certainly a remarkable sequence of play from a player who is widely considered to be the best in the world on current form. It is a stark reminder of just how tough the world of professional golf can be, even for the most talented of players.
